Fives' Ultimate Technology for Efficient Heat Transfer Applications

Fives and its Cryogenics | Energy business line provide ultimate performance brazed aluminium heat exchangers (BAHX) based on the renowned Trane technology.

The technology of brazed aluminium plate-fin heat exchangers was developed during World War II in response to the demand for light, compact and efficient heat transfer equipment for the aircraft industry.

In the early 1950's, this technology was adapted to meet the needs of heat transfer equipment for low temperature gas processing and liquefaction plants.

Today, a wide variety of low temperature processes use brazed heat exchangers, and in most cases these exchangers have become an integral part of various plants (air separation units, natural gas processing, LNG etc...).

High Reliability

BAHX do not require maintenance and provide more than 99.99% availability (i.e. less than 0.01% downtime).

Design Flexibility

A wide range of sizes, configurations and fin types, with design pressures up to 140 bar, allows Fives to offer tailor-made design and optimization through its in-house design and simulation software.

Low Temperature Approaches

Temperature approaches as low as 2-3°C reduce energy consumption. Approaches can even be smaller than 1°C for special applications. Customers can benefit from lower energy consumption.

Key Advantages

  • Compactness and lightness: surface areas per volume up to 2,000 m/ m3 (four to five times as many as conventional exchangers) ; reduced footprints and weights of exchangers.
  • Mechanical properties of aluminium enhanced at low temperatures.
  • Large temperature gradients from warm end to cold end (up to 200°C).
  • High and low pressure streams can exist in adjacent passages in the same exchanger.
  • More than 10,000 units manufactured since 1959, under successive brands known as Trane, Nordon Cryogenie, Fives Cryogenie and now Fives.

Construction

Fives' brazed heat exchanger consists of a block (core) of alternating layers containing corrugated fins, separated by parting sheets. Each layer is sealed along its edges by means of bars; the inlet and outlet ports of each stream are left open.

After brazing the core in a vacuum furnace, headers and nozzles are welded to allow for connection to the inlet and outlet piping.

Brazed heat exchangers are multi-chamber pressure vessels and are designed and tested in accordance with applicable pressure vessel construction codes and regulations.
